چکیده

osteoporosis is a metabolic disease characterized by reduction in bone density and susceptibility to deformity and fracture. some studies show that osteoblasts can create inter-cellular free radicals that lead to cellular death. superoxide dismutase (sod) plays an essential role in cell defense against reactive oxygen metabolites. the purpose of this study was to measure the plasma sod activities in iranian women with osteoporosis compared to the control group. sod activity was measured spectrophotometrically at 540 nm in 192 women. plasma activity of sod (mean ± sd) was 1.72 ± 0.79 mg protein in the control group, 2.05 ± 0.87 mg protein in patients as a whole [(mild osteopenia + severe osteopenia and osteoporosis) (t-score

The Effects of Progressive Resistance Training on Malondialdehyde Concentration and Superoxide Dismutase Enzyme Activity in Inactive Elderly Women

Background and Aim: Aging process is associated with increased free radicals and cellular damage. However, resistance training may cause balance of the oxidative and antioxidant system in the elderly. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of eight weeks of progressive resistance training (PRT) on malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme ...

Salivary superoxide dismutase activity in the consumers of paan containing tobacco

Introduction:The habit of smokeless tobacco chewing is one of the known risk factors for oral cancer among the residents of southeast of Iran. Most likely, the antioxidant defense system in dealing with free radicals induced paan and prevention of oral cancer is important. In this study, the activity of superoxide dismutase is compared in the saliva of paan consumers and non-consumers. Metho...

Antioxidant Systems in Poultry Biology: Superoxide Dismutase

Commercial poultry production is associated with various stresses responsible for decreasing productive and reproductive performance of growing chicks, breeders and commercial layers. A growing body of evidence shows that most of stresses in poultry production at the cellular level are associated with oxidative stress. Recently, a concept of the cellular antioxidant defense has been revised wit...

The Effect of Normobaric Hyperoxia on Superoxide Dismutase Activity and Neurologic Deficits in Huntington Animal Model

Introduction: resent studies have been shown that normobaric hyperoxia (HO) can induce excitotoxicity and stress oxidative tolerance (ETT) in variety of organs such as brain. In this study, we examined the intermittent dose of normobaric hyperoxia (HO) on neurologic deficit, and superoxide dismutase activity in brain tissue of Huntington animal model. Method: The rats were divided to three...
